It is known as the City of Angels and TinselTown but Los Angeles still remains the nation’s second largest city with, perhaps, the most diverse population and attractions to be found anywhere on the globe. However, here are more than a few things you really don’t know about Los Angeles…

  • Los Angeles, and California, was once a colony of Mexico. After the War Against Mexico ended in 1848 with the United States victorious, the country took California, New Mexico and Arizona from the defeated Mexican government.
  • When Los Angeles had been a part of Mexico, its name was officially El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula. After that incredible mouthful of Spanish gets translated to English, it literally means, The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Porciuncula River.
  • The coroner’s office of Los Angeles actually has a gift shop. There you can buy such things as body bag luggage, videos of local murders and, of course, beach towels.

  • Residents of the Watts section of LA have a life expectancy of 12 years less than the residents of the Bel-Air section of LA.
  • In Pasadena, you can visit the famed Bunny Museum. It is in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most stuffed bunny’s and related bunny memorabilia in the world.
  • You should be able to navigate your way around LA because 135 different world languages are spoken in the city.
  • Over 3.4 million people live in LA who were born in other countries.

  • The Hollywood Walk of Fame contains 2,518 stars.
  • Hollywood ended up in California to avoid protracted legal battles with Thomas Edison. At the time, Edison owned the patents on just about all of the industry’s films.
  • The Church of Scientology is headquartered in the city and had a LA street that runs through its church complex renamed to be called L. Ron Hubbard Way.
  • The round Capitol Records building was the very first circular building ever built in the world.
  • The Los Angeles economy is bigger than 46 American states and has over 200,000 small businesses.

  • In LA, it’s against the law to cry on the witness stand, lick a toad or frog, or to have more than one child under the age of 2 in a bathtub at the same time.
