What to Do and See in Vienna

Tourists On Foot Graben Street In Vienna.

Vienna, Austria was for centuries the leader of the European empire. This city, while it now only serves as the capital of Austria, is full of history, culture, and architecture. There’s a quiet sense of elegance pervasive throughout this city, which is packed with museums, eateries and incredible beauty.

If you have a few days to spend in Vienna, consider the following highlights:

The first thing you’ll want to do is scoop up a Vienna Card. It costs only about 20 Euros, and you can use it to get free rides on public transportation and discounts on everything from museums to theaters. It lasts for 72 hours, so it’s perfect if you’re just spending a few days in the city.

Take a whirl in the Vienna Ring Tram, which winds around the Ringstrasse. This centrally located area features some of Vienna’s most well-known locales including the Parliament Building, the State Opera House and the Hofburg Palace. During your time in this part of the city visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a 12th-century icon of gothic architecture that offers stunning panoramic views of Vienna.

As far as the museums, perhaps one of the most impressive is the Kumsthistorisches Museum, which translates to Art History Museum. It was constructed in 1891 to house the collection of the Royal Family. Right next door is the Museum of Natural History, and if you tire of museum hopping, you can get fresh air in Stadtpark, which is the first public park in the city.

The Naschmarkt is an open-air market that’s been operating since the Middle Ages. This large market includes more than 100 stalls, plenty of fresh, local produce, and also restaurants. This is a good spot to not only buy a bite to eat but also to people watch.

If you’re looking for a more elegant dining experience, consider taking a trip to Restaurant Steirereck. This is Vienna’s only restaurant to earn the distinction of being a double-Michelin starred establishment. You can find both classic, traditional Austrian fare with more modern and internationally-inspired fare here. If you love wine this is an excellent venue for you, consider there’s a cellar of more than 35,000 bottles onsite.

For a taste of Vienna’s past, present and future, visit Glacis Beisl. This bistro-style eatery is elegant, but also tends to attract a younger and trendier crowd than some of the city’s more formal eateries. You can dine outdoors in the gardens, and enjoy the historic old town feel of the restaurant’s location.

Finally, if you want a taste of the imperial past of Vienna, visit Schonbrunn Palace. It’s about an hour drive from Vienna with 1441 rooms and a Baroque architectural style. It showcases the style and history of Hapsburgs and is truly an awe-inspiring palace and collection of gardens. Also located on the property is the Roman Ruin, which are follies designed in 1778 as part of the gardens. If your timing is correct you may even be able to enjoy a concert during your visit, or take your trip during the Summer Night Concert Schonbrunn, held annually.
